Dear supporter,
Following the extensive support our
industry has received from the wider
public in our endeavour to save our
great Aussie icon, the genuine Australian
sheepskin ugg boot, the industry has
formed an association and appointed
Intellectual Property Lawyers, Griffith
Hack, to act on our behalf - and on
behalf of our great Aussie Icon, the
ugg name.
In Australia we have taken action
to remove two old unused trademarks,
'ugh' & 'ugh-boots' (owned by the
U.S. company Deckers Outdoor Corporation
trading as 'UGG Australia') due to
their non-use and we are advised our
prospects are very good to achieve
this.
Our greatest challenge will be to
'claim back' ownership of our very
Australian, and internationally recognised,
word 'ugg' (and its derivatives) from
the company that has tried to hijack
it from our Australian vocabulary.
Our great Australian manufacturers
of Australian tanned sheepskin ugg
boots have very good marketers of Australian
ugg boots internationally and it is
in the U.S. that the U.S. company,
Deckers Outdoor Corporation trading
as Ugg Holdings, Inc., has taken action
to 'squash' those companies. If
they succeed they will have won the
fight. For those of you who reside
in the U.S. please lobby your trademark
office and politicians and generally
show your outrage at this whole affair.
The Australian Sheepskin Association
Inc. wishes to stand by our customers
and the 'ugg' icon, but the funds required
will be considerable. The Association
has opened a bank account and should
you wish to support us in claiming
back that which is rightly Australian,
